Hi folks Had my assesment with my consultant.Pleased to say I have bee given the all clear.I can start cycling again a week today albeit gently, can't Waite, that's eight weeks post op.
First three weeks post op were not good .After three weeks my condition improved quite quickly.Started walking for an hour twice a week turbo for thirty mins three times a week .
I will have to take Aspirin and a Statin substitute for the rest of my life and Beta blocker for the foreseeable future.I am now able to exert myself and not pass out.I was in hospital for five days post op ,just hope the weather doesn't deteriorate.

All the best for a speedy and total recovery:thumbsup:

I'm glad that you are doing well, pawl!

A mate's brother had the same operation as you and he, like me, is now on warfarin for life to minimise the risk of clotting. I wondered why you are not on it, but a quick search showed that some studies suggest that it is not necessary for bioprosthetic valves - I assume that is the type you had fitted? I also found other studies that indicated that warfarin, or warfarin plus aspirin are safer than aspirin alone. Did the consultant discuss the risks/benefits of different anticoagulation regimes with you?

Hi Colin I have a biological valve replacement so do not need Wafarin . I was on 4Aspirin a day for the first 6 weeks this has now been reduced to 1 a day.Plus a substitute for Statin and a beta blocker for the foreseeable future.Apparently when you are getting on in years mechanical valve is not considered an option With a mechanical valve there is a high risk of cloting due to cells sticking to the valve hence the need for Warfarin for life, plus because the blood is thinner a bleed can be major problem.
My consultant didn't go in to anticoagulant therapy in great detail.

Yes, my mate's brother had the mechanical type of valve.

It's nice being able to exercise again, isn't it - I couldn't get my head round not even being able to walk down 1 flight of stairs last summer at the grand old age of 56!

My problem wasi didn't feel unwell that is until I passed out walking up Skidaw in the lakes I just passed out for aprox 2 minutes.Prior to this I had been symptom free or so I thought. At worst I thought I might have Angina ,how wrong can you be.With hindsight I realized my cycling performance had deteriorated not that it was that brilliant and was I thought down to advancing years.Moral any chest shoulder or pain in the area of the jaw get checked out

A lucky escape!

(I was pretty stupid, having had weeks worth of severe warnings but ignoring them!)
