Just developed quite a loud rattle and narrowed it down to the front derailleur. Not sure what it's called but the bit that pivots over the top of the chain has a fair bit of play in it. Still works ok but is getting a bit annoying. Can it be sorted or is it worth investing in a new one (the rattly one I think is a Shimano Nexave T301 which came with the bike) and if so any reccommendations?

New one.

ebay. Plenty for a fiver (99p + p&p cos no-one else bids). People upgrade and sell off perfectly good new/near-new front mechs for peanuts.

yep - replace. I had an XT one go floppy - the new fangled top piull aren't as robust as the old style bottom pull ones.

Yeah. You might be able to shut it up by adjusting it, maybe. Try twisting it so that it's not parallel to the chain but in slightly at the back, then re-adjust it.

Even with new ones it can be hard to get them not rubbing.

Looks like a new one then. Had a look at ebay but all a bit confusing....it's a Specialized Sirrus I've got with a triple chainset and an 8 speed cassette so what sort of thing would suit best. Also if I picked up a cheap one is it easy enough to fit myself or would my LBS be the best bet?

Think I've worked out that a Shimano Sora 3304 Triple Front Derailleur would be a suitable replacement but would a Shimano Tiagra do the job as well. I see they seem to be for 9 speed cassettes rather than 8 but does it make any difference and is there much to choose between the two ranges.

Won't make much of a difference - you'll be fine.

Thanks. Had actually started reading up on Tiagra groupset and upgrading everything. Saw another new thread asking the same question and the start of the Shimano or not debate. Might put up with the rattle for a while, do some reading and save up some pennies before the wife starts moaning!!!!!!!

Rattles gone! Gave everything a good clean yesterday and it's gone of its own accord. Still considering upgrading...may be looking for some advice in the near future.
