My Claris STI shifters have rattled since the day I got the bike (new). I've since been told that isn't normal for Claris shifters. They seem to rattle more when the cable tension is low (smaller rings) and less when the cable tension is high (large rings). I have no idea where to start. Is there anything I can do to get them to stop rattling?

If it's not normal and the bike is new, shouldn't the retailer sort it, even if it means replacing

I'd take it back to where you got it. The interior workings of Brifters are fairly complex, if something has come adrift inside, you may find yourself with a jammed shifter, or brake.

Not sure if my 8 speed are Claris or not , look like them , anyway there is a screw under the front face plate that the housing slides onto I think ( been a while) , if this is loose you get a constant rattle , think you have to undo the small screw on top to get to the screw underneath.

You said they rattled from new? Why didn't you get it looked at then?
Don't you think I've been asking myself that question? I've already been kicking myself over this, I don't need more people adding to it.

I didn't realize they weren't supposed to, it came from an online vendor, I'd already given them significant hassle over the barrel adjuster that was jammed.

Hindsight is great. I'm not looking for that. I'm looking for solutions. Maybe I just need to replace them.

Is there any slack in the brake cables?

Now I remember I think , pull on the brake lever to reveal the screw you have to undo then pull off the plastic housing( it will still have the cable going through it ) and I think that part in the pic on the link you push this into the plastic housing then you clip the plastic housing back on the shifter , all you need is a small star screwdriver .

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Took mine to bits today, glued that bit of metal on with a very small bit of glue so i can still get it off if i need to and found a small bit of plastic that had snapped off.

After i put it all back together i did a quick ride up and down the road and it seems to be ok .
