The tyre will have come off the rim (hence the duf duf duf ) allowing the tube to escape. Unconstrained by the tyre, the tube exploded like a excitable balloon.

What didn't happen was the tube exploding and blowing the tyre off the rim.

Presumably the tyre became partly unseated on your ride in, then finished the job while you were sat at your desk. If it had happened while you were riding, you would have heard the tube explode.

if it had gone when you were riding you'd have known about it, the bang is very loud and the handling goes wild very quickly.

examine the tyre bead as there is likely to be a fault or damage to it, causing it to fail to seat right on the rim.

Another possible cause is the rim getting too thin, due to extended use. Each time you brake, assuming rim brakes, a smidgeon of rim material wears away. Eventually the rim gets thin enough that it can flex outwards, allowing the tyre to unseat, with hilarious results.

If that were the case, it'd be the front rather than the rear... The rear brakes get less use than my tuxedo.
