Unless it’s hooning it down with rain or you will be out for many hours in more than light rain; you are better off with a windproof and wicking layers below for cycling. You will be more comfortable in most cases.

The thing is, it still seems to be the best material for that purpose (i.e. waterproof with good breathability). Shakedry even more so - RIP!

RE: limitations. My experience over the years of listening to people (hill-walkers AND cyclists) critiquing goretex is that they fail to realise they will be warmer - and thus sweat MORE - if they simply add a goretex garment over their other clothing!
(This is why until it's a really cold day - or really hooning down with rain - I tend to use a water-resistant system that keeps me warm enough, and dry enough. A perfect balance that is often elusive, admittedly ... )

I use Goretex and two other systems for my hill walking these days.

They are much of a muchness ime.

I tend to steer clear of 3 layer as they are too heavy and bulky and I no longer winter climb.

Limitations with all of them is that they do not breathe when it is raining and when it is dry they cannot allow moisture to escape quick enough when you are working hard.

My 3 current jackets all have long pit zips and through pocket ventilation and just about work OK.

Polartec NeoShell is textile that came closest to being waterproof and genuinely breathable while working hard. While my NeoShell jacket isn’t perfect, it’s way better than Gore-Tex waterproofs for breathability.

However, Sportful and Ornot seem the only cycling brands with NeoShell jackets in their ranges. I guess Gore-Tex gets more brand recognition than Polartec for waterproofs.

I thought my Rab coat was a hefty chunk at £140 ten years ago! But to be fair, it has lasted brilliantly. Still looks fairly new and has even been through the wash about 5 times. No broken zip, no loose stitching, still the same shape as when new. If I cycled a lot I would probably consider the 695 coat if it was totally waterproof

It's 2024 and we're still doing Rapha is overpriced?

Rapha has been middle-market for a long time. Brandt-Sorenson's where it's at these days!

I was looking at these earlier, I quite like the look but would be very nervous about getting the right size, I have lost six inches off of my waste this year and there is still a bit to go.
