Found a bit of an issue today: as I was fitting rear derailleur and cables I discovered that the cable outer was pulling through the brazed-on guide on the chain stay; I'm assuming it's broken, although I suppose it might just have stretched - are they all a closed loop?
I put a clamp-on next to it so I can now change gear, but because the cable runs underneath the stay the clamp-on is upside down and I'm a bit worried it might impede the chain, never mind the fact that it looks a bit strange with a bolty bit sticking up in full view! It's also finished off the already tatty chainstay protector, but I'm guessing they're freely available.

The cable needs a ferrule on the end, not just a plain one though there are some ally ones that fit into the cable stop (braze on) with a thinner extension that goes through.
Goes off to Google.

...one thing with them there old Raleighs, the BB shell threads are 26TPI, rather than the common standard of 24TPI. Limits your choice somewhat if you do need to replace/upgrade the BB. Story goes Raleigh thought they were too big to kowtow to such new standards - ended up painting themselves into a corner. Similar thing with Sturmey Archer hubs - the axles and nuts are an old imperial size - not interchangeable with metric versions. Anyways, a worthy restoration from the look of it...

I'd say that the Sirocco is after Raleigh 'bit the bullet' and changed to the standard 'BSA' thread (might be a bit of a clue there as to why Raleigh used a different thread pitch)

....any idea when they did the change over ? My brother back in UK had an old Raleigh, from about mid eighties as I recall, and it had the old 26TPI threads....
