Altura and Endura jackets are good.

Otherwise, just get out and ride, bikes are designed for wet. Rain riding can be fun.
My best bike goes out in all weathers and apart from some judicious chain lubing get's little care. Given a proper clean it looks like new and it's 7 years old.

Try looking in a military surplus store I picked up a goretex light weight (ok it's DPM) jacket for £12.00 Grade 2, unissued they where out of stock but it works fine I just shove a Hi Viz waistcoat over it and of I go oh and I always wipe the bike down etc if I have been in the rain.

I took delivery of my nice new bike in November and managed half a dozen rides up to mid-Dec.

Is there a cyclists version of Sod's Law?

I have become dispirited!

I felt that way when I bought a boat, seemed to be windy or rainy every weekend for 4 years!

I've just got myself some rollers for my bike, and have been making good use of them past few weeks, still keeping me engaged and motivated, now I have enough of a handle on riding them to be able to watch tv at the same time, a 35- 40 min session seems to fly past. And outside its dark, wet and windy.

I wear a fleece base layer and a compression base, one or two ski base layers and my cycle shirt, depending on temps as to what i wear, also have arm warmers, lower fleece lined tights with flat stitching shorts and some ski base leggings, they are supposed to be a base layer but work well enough as over's I have some cycle trousers but they are way to big these days, leg warmers and two pairs of socks, again what is worn is dependent on temp, never seem to get wet, even if working hard, I could do with some overshoes for extra insulation, but I have got through the winter so far without.

pocket rocket to use if its not too bad, night vision for when the heavens open

but just go out, no point in having a bike and not using it, my carbon goes out in all weathers

then spend the day after cleaning it!

Thanks for all your advice (apart from the above - there's always at least one on a forum!).

So today I toddled off to Evans and tried on several jackets including some of the ones you have recommended.

Ended up with an Altura Blitz which was a lot lighter than some but more substantial than others. Fits well and is a nice bright yellow.

And....I got out on my bike although it was not raining today but it is very cold. The jacket with a Helly Hansen Lifa underneath was spot on re temperature feeling just right.

£60 (probably could have found it cheaper on the web but I am impatient) well spent I think.

Evans have it for £50 on their own website (and it was £50 in the Kingston store last weekend). Good to hear it works well though

Edit - the red one is reduced, not the yellow

You're right - strange bit of pricing.

I tried a red one on and I looked magnificent in it. But the yellow one made me even more magnificenter!
