Not sure about the stuck-up nobs bit, but deffo try tli, look at

Cheaper than bc, less rules etc, and some/most races are handicapped, which means that you set of in a group according to age/ability, slower groups going off before fast groups, and supposedly all comes together at the finish. Doesnt always quite work out that way.
It means that for your first race you will be in a group of say 10-20 riders, similar ability to you, and you might get a chance to sprint it out for the win. Bit less intimididating for a newbie than 80 riders of varying abilities in a group.
