Quick Links

Need some help before my engineering brain goes mad.
I am trying to quick link my chain back onto my bike after rebuilding. It has a 7 speed Shimano gear assembly and a 7.19mm thick KMC chain.
No matter what Quick Link I order the pins are too short to assemble it.
Some advice please on getting the correct quick link which is proving very difficult.

What quick links have you tried so far ?

Up to 9 speed, I've never bothered with quick links. Just used the chain splitter tool to rejoin. Needs a bit of practice and skill to join it without getting a stiff link, but once mastered, it's easy.

Learned my lesson though with a 10 speed. Chain broke when out on a ride a few months later. I was able to rejoin it again and when home put a new chain with a quick link.

6/7/8 speed drivetrains use the same chain: so (obv) same dimensions. 9sp ones are narrower and need a different quick link. I'll make the rash assumption that you're trying to join your 7sp chain with a 9sp quick link.

You need to remove the outer plates on one end of your chain. The quick link joins together with an inner link at each end of the chain

KMC are splittable so even if you have no quick link providing you have a chain splitter you can join it back together assuming you know how to do it. If not I'm sure Boobtube has a video that covers it. Saves on the cost of a quick link, which is proving to be not very quick anyway 😉

it looks to me like you are trying to join outer plates, when you should be trying to join inner links..?
Look at the most recent image you posted, and see that there should be a thinner link between the 2 end…. Any quick link would replace the outer plates….
@newts image shows the thinner, inner links which will be joined by a quick link as the outer plates.

I see but if i remove another link chain would be to short! Have i lost the plot?
