Questioning my choice of bike

For a few years i did some Light mountain bike trails on an entry level MTB (Giant Terrago Disc) but i started to ride more and more around the lanes so i put some slick tyres on it and a rack and would happily go out on 30 mile rides at a slowish to leisurely pace which i thoroughly enjoyed ... then i got the notion to switch to a more road orientated bike to make life a little easier on the hills and basically a more miles for less effort type ride so i bought a flat bar Cannondale Synapse which is a cracking bike but now that i have got a good few long rides under my belt on it i dont seem to enjoy my cycling as much as i did when i was riding the slick tyred MTB ?

I've read plenty of threads on here about people making the same switch as i have and they say they would never go back ? but has anyone ever not taken to switching to a road bike from an MTB and gone back to the MTB ? I know this bit sounds really stupid as i cant quite get my own head around it but when i ride the Cannondale i feel like i have to ride everwhere as quickly as possible ? (i told you it was stupid) yet on the MTB i used to enjoy pottering along at a leisurely pace ?

Cycling is about doing what you enjoy. I used to potter around enjoying the scenery but then got bored with the same old backdrop so it was a progression of sorts to try and get more out of cycling as a means of getting fit.

I haven't explored the off-road so much - it's sort of tucked away for a rainy day when I'm past it.
