I will keep an eye as the funeral is nearly 300 miles away it is 50/50 whether i can go .

If i cannot make the funeral and no one else can come i will be happy to come and have a fettle.

Good to know there are some friendly, helpful people.

Just had a couple thoughts. These may help you ride until you can get the gear shifting sorted out.

If your bike is a gripshift (turn the handlebar to change gear) then you don't need to stick to the numbers on the left hand shifter. Try and find a position either on the number or somewhere in between where the rubbing/scraping noise stops and if you can ride with it in that position it will feel a lot better.

Also another thing to try is to overshift with the left hand when changing gear. If you push a little too far up or down from the number 2 and then let it slot back into the 2 position after the chain has moved then it may change gear a bit easier (and without that horrible "I'm grinding my bike to pieces" noise).

That's very good advice from Mcshroom, well done to him for thinking of this.

I just had another look at the model of bike Mrs Fry has and they are indeed gripshifters.

Yes, as Mcshroom said, move the shifters into a position where the noise stops, or at least is minimised if you can. Don't worry about the position of the numbers on the shifters. If this works then whenever you change gear find a position for the shifter that has a similar effect near the gear you've selected.

Hopefully this will keep you going until you can properly sort the gears.

Some gears will rattle more than others as well ... try the gear either side and see if they are less noisy.

The other thing is going back to what mcshroom said; have a look at the front set of rings and what number/letter you are on, on the left hand side. Sometimes they don't line up so although you might be on the middle ring, to get the mechanism that shifts to be directly over that middle ring you may need it not pointing to 2/exactly between L and H, and instead moving it one or two clicks up or down might be the right point instead.

You can experiment with this whilst not cycling the bike ... just turn the left hand gripshift by a couple of clicks as you look down at the front rings from above and you can see how it moves. The bit that moves is the bit you want over the centre ring. You don't want to turn it too far that its trying to change onto another ring but usually a couple of clicks should be fine.

How long is your lunchtime Mrs Fry?

The BEST bike shop near your work is Gascoign's in Coleshill.

Mind you, they are HILLS that way. No not hills, volcanos.

Alternatively, If you want a nice afternoon wander, turn right of the main Fazeley road and go through Bodymoor Heath. Pass the Water Park and continue straight on at the island to Whitacre Heath and then turn left after the railway bridge to Shustoke.

There is a bloke who has a bike repair shop behind the Plough Pub ( the pub with the CTC 'winged wheel' disc above the window ).

This route cuts out all the hills ( except the railway bridge ).
