Here's a hypothetical situation (which must have occurred somewhere at some point):

Artic driver is convicted of causing death by dangerous driving in his lorry and disqualified from driving for five years. He is also ordered to sit an extended driving test when his ban is over.

Q. Does he have to resit his test in an HGV or just a standard car, or both?

He will also be out of date with his CPC, so getting back into an LGV will expensive. I suspect that the reality is that his days as a professional LGV driver are over. The increased insurance costs alone would make it difficult to find an employer. Sorry can't answer the original question.

I believe (not from experience I might add) that a ban applies to driving in general, not just the vehicle class your banned driving. Thus Motorbike ban applies to car / truck too. Could be quite a thing to have to re-take test for several different vehicle types. I guess you might lose grandfathers' taylor-towing rights or 7.5 tonner rights too. Don't know though

Usually, when you re-take 1 test, you regain all entitlements.

But I'm unsure if this applies to professional licenses..

Good question, and don't know!
I would imagine though that if he lost his licence for an offence which took place whilst driving an artic, then that will be the class of vehicle he will need to resit the test in.

Thanks for the replies so far. I was hoping that the situation described by @Drago was the case but I've found this on a law site ( although I don't know how reliable it is):

Disqualification until test pass or extended test pass
If you're disqualified until test pass or extended test pass, to regain your full driving licence you'll need to apply for a provisional driving licence and retake a theory and practical driving test.

Motorcycle riders will need to complete another compulsory basic training (CBT). If you're disqualified until extended test pass, you'll have to sit an extended practical driving test.

To regain your full entitlement to drive all categories of vehicles you previously held, you'll need to pass a test in category A (motorcycle) or B (car).

If you previously held category C (large vehicle) and or D (bus), restoration of entitlement will be subject to the approval of the local traffic commissioner.

Maybe @CopperCyclist can confirm?

Traffic Commisiomer?

Ill check at work for you tomorrow if you like. Not much else happening at my desk so far this week.

Edit. I think the answer may be 'it depends..'

http://www.nidirect.gov.uk/the-extended-practical-driving-test.

It would seem that lorry entitlement is only restored without passing the appropriate test in exceptional circumstances. I've certainly never heard it, but then I'd never heard of One Direction until the other day.

Here is what the GOV.UK site has to say about it; and even that doesn't make things very clear. My understanding of that page is that you "must apply for a new provisional driving licence before you take the tests you need". Note the plural, tests. So it seems like, as Drago posted, you have to start again from scratch, and in addition if you want to drive an HGV or a PCV then "the local Traffic Commissioner must agree". Basically I think what they are trying to say is if you get disqualified from driving an HGV/PCV and ordered to resit a test, then forget about ever driving for a living again!
If it is simply a case of disqualification WITHOUT having to resit a test then your HGV/PCV licence will automatically be restored when the disqualification period ends (as long as you apply for it).
