Is there much to it? I've a Ribble Stealth with an oversized BB, looking at my Bianchi and then at the Ribble I'm not sure it will take it? Went with the Dogtooth rather than the K-edge purely because fo the £££ difference. Help apprecated.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...
Did you measure the diameter of the seat tube? Is it round? The Dogfang comes in a limited number of diameters, and doesn't fit non-circular tubes. If it fits there's not a lot to it, though I found I had to pinch it up tight to get the bolt started. I also had to fit a thin plastic shim on my frame as non of the sizes fitted exactly enough.

Yeah, think i've the right diameter, doesnt look to be a great deal of space where it's required thou ( oversized BB?) Guess i'm going to find out when it arrives.

Hi,

Could I ask you - a bit late in the day, I know - whether you managed to fit the dog fang to the Ribble, and - if so - what size?

Thanks.

The Fang is fitted to the bottom of your seat tube, below your front derailleur. They are available in three sizes and you must make sure that you get the right one for your bike. Measure the diameter of your tube if you don’t know it and can’t look it up on the manufacturer’s website. I measured my seat tube by closing a big adjustable spanner on the tube and then measuring between the jaws. Crafty, huh?

NB This measurement is the outside of the tube – your seat post fits inside the tube so that is not the diameter you want!

If you have a bike with a non-circular tube, or one that is an unconventional size, then you are out of luck. The 3 available sizes are 28.6 mm, 31.8 mm, and 34.9 mm.

Thanks very much indeed for your reply - I'm in the middle of nowhere in southern France and, believe it or not, have no reliable way of measuring the tube - so have written to the manufacturer. I'd already read your article on the dog fang - that's what made me decide to buy one! My chain is thrown off when changing from the big ring to the small and nowhere can I find good info on how to adjust the FD screws properly on my Campag Record - it's the simplest of tasks, it's just the screws (nothing to do with the alignment of the FD, etc.) but I'm new to all this so thought the dog fang might be the best option.

Thanks again.

I agree that the K Edge chain catcher is ridiculously expensive for what it is. But, as an alternative to doing Hard Sums to find your seat tube diameter, you could get yourself a Token chain catcher, which is a copy of the K Edge one, for about a tenner. You'll need a braze-on front mech though.

(And just to repeat, the Dog Fang will only fit if your seat tube is round in section where it needs to be attached below the front mech.)
