Large amounts of salt are used. Often visible on the surface. Not so common nowadays.

Anyone missing the adverts for the "white stuff"?
http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/calcium-full-story/
"Those advertisements pushing milk as the answer to strong bones are almost inescapable. But does “got milk?” really translate into “got strong bones?”

The pro-milk faction believes that increased calcium intake—particularly in the form of the currently recommended three glasses of milk per day—will help prevent osteoporosis, the weakening of bones. Each year, osteoporosis leads to more than 1.5 million fractures, including 300,000 broken hips.

On the other side are those who believe that consuming a lot of milk and other dairy products will have little effect on the rate of fractures but may contribute to problems such as heart disease or prostate cancer.

Which view is right? The final answers aren’t in. But here is a summary of what’s currently known about calcium and its effects on the body."

It's a bit more complicated than that...
.

The only problem is that natural yoghurt is absolutely inedible, one of the most sour and foul tasting foods going. Thats why yoghurt is stuffed full of sugar to make it taste half decent.
You won't be surprised to hear that I disagree.

Wean yourself off sugar and you'll be able to appreciate the sourer end of the taste spectrum.

I gave up having sugar in tea when I was a teenager, cos I wanted to lose weight. Going from 2 spoons to nil instantly made tea taste disgusting for a couple of weeks, but now any sugar in tea tastes disgusting. Sadly, I still like other sweet things, but am about to make an effort to cut down on the sugar, starting with switching to natural yogurt on my cereal, and trying to find cereal bars with no added sugar (the latter may not be possible!)

I have to say at this point I do not necessarily buy the foods that are sold as low sugar I read the label & decide for myself, I also avoid all low fat versions of food as they as mostly just stuffed full of sugar to make them edible.
:banghead: Some foods labelled "low fat" are just what they always were but with a "low fat" label stuck on them. Avoiding them all seems rather foolish - just read the labels, as with other things. Similarly with traffic light labels - they're increasingly applied to unprocessed and barely-processed food too.

I go for natural greek style yogurt and then just look at the label for one with the lowest sugar content.
Why not make your own yogurt? It's quite easy, except for keeping a good starter for long.

As are statisticians...
Nah, we tend to be blunt force objects, not that slow ;)

With all these sugary energy gels that the pro peloton are taking do you think that we will be seeing adverts in 40 years time from industrial disease solicitors akin to the current ones wanting anyone who has worked with asbestos or worked down a mine? I don't.
Not adverts that we'll see, as the pro peloton is quite easy to identify and small enough to approach individually, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone has a go at one of the gel sponsors in a decade or two.

I was given one of those so called energy things, it was like eating wall paper paste.
"Like a tellytubby blowjob" remains the most memorable review of a gel I've yet read.

why the world's obese

Oh my goodness

Look, the world is not obese through consumption of ****** sugar FACT!

Unrefined sugar (Brown) is perfectly OK within a normal person with a good diet

The world is obese through eating to much meat and dairy products, THATS WHAT MAKES PEOPLE OVERWEIGHT

Find me a overweight person, note OVERWEIGHT! on a diet with none meat/fish and dairy diet

Go to any country where the diet is mainly fruit and veg, find a overweight person, they are hard to find, these countries have hardly any dairy or meat in there supermarkets, the people look healthy and lean

Go to any country where the supermarkets are stuffed with dairy and meat, thats all the western world, and you'l find people overweight on every corner

Sorry for my rant, I've fixed some grammar and edited, though I'm still right and your wrong :P

Just not true, various resources mentioned throughout this thread explain why.

Which countries? Ones, that is, that aren't also poor and have difficulty feeding their populations.

Posting in bold doesn't make you correct or even more convincing. Rather the opposite, in fact...

People are obese because they eat crap and don't exercise, end of story. The navvies who dug the canals lived on beer and steak and they were not obese - tough hard working yes - but not obese. Eat it, burn it. One visit to the gym a week isn't going to burn off quarter of a million calories. Don't have to eat grass and drink rainwater, match input to output and stop believing the bull.

I was watching a video on youtube last night & this very point was discussed so I thought you might like to watch it so here is the link:

Sugar and Health - The Sweet, the Sour, and the Sticky! -
View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kG1J9995Nm8&index=3&list=FLdf6l_t-IOgr-j3Jt_AZsqw

Thanks a lot. I'll look at it later. I saw the first half of 'That/The Sugar Film ' the other night. Quite good, and also available on youtube.

I've been trying to find out more about the subject and respond here, but the kids are sucking the lifeblood out of me at the present.
