A large carrot weighs c.100g and, according to Wiki (etc.), contains 5% sugar. 5g of sugar is a little more than a teaspoons worth. If I eat 5 carrots a day will I get fat?

you do understand the difference between naturally occuring and refined/processed don't you. its not like salt where sodium chloride in excess is not good regardl;ess of it being sea salt or mined salt .
"sugar" is a catch all term for the "oses" i laughed my nuts off watching a cookery programme yesterday where he made marshmallows by heating sugar then adding " glucose" aaah you mean more refined sugar.

eat 5x 5g of syrup everyday , and see what happens based on the natural 5 x 5g from carrots . there will be some calories used in digesting the carrots other components . with the refined crap watch it pile the pounds on.

beer is a good hidden refined sugar source. i stop drinking beer and weight falls off me. sadly i struggle with not having a few beers as i do like it .

And presumably you understand that alcohol is a poison?

So sugar and alcohol together.....we're all doomed!

yup , fully understand that , and the reasons i am a chunky geezer . I choose not to do too much about it.

the big problem is the big food corps not givinmg us that choice by loading " healthy food" with sugar which is far far worse than the fat it replaced.

I have noticed my cholesterol come down since i started to use butter in cooking rather than a vegetable oil , reduced the amount of "low fat " stuff and reduced the amount of sugar in my diet !

not everybody needs statins ( some will but not the numbers we have taking them), the vast majority can do it by diet but too many people are lazy and take the pill popping way out

You don't realise how much supposition there is in your worldview.

What makes you think "sodium chloride in excess is not good for you"?

I can't argue with that advice!

What I was thinking off when I posted before was something simple like yoghurt as an example. Lots of low fat stuff about these days but is it better to seek out non-low fat stuff?

Have we become fixated on using lean meat and avoiding too much fat in it, taking skin off chicken etc. I was just trying to work out how to change my own shopping habits because I have become conditioned to avoiding high fat stuff on the shelves.

As long as you're looking for natural products, I don't see anything wrong with choosing the low-fat option. If you're talking about yoghurt, buy natural fat-free yoghurt, then add your own fruit.

I go for natural greek style yogurt and then just look at the label for one with the lowest sugar content.

Lots of different studies .

The one that sticks out the most is the one with the link between sodium and calorie intake. ( hmmm wonder where those calories came from .... ) that does concern me a lot mor than big salt excess .

It is funny that salt and sugar got added in larger concentrations when fat got removed from food in the name of health though

I guess they have to add something to the 'low fat' food to make it taste edible, but to be allowed to remove the fat then stuff it full of sugar & then still call it 'low fat' it isn't very 'low fat' once it gets inside the body.

Natural yoghurt doesn't have sugar in it! It's made of milk and yoghurt culture and nothing else. Any "sugar" on the label will be lactose from the milk, which is entirely natural. The killer is the added sugar, as it's so easy to digest.

It has become habit now for me to check what is in something before I buy it rather than just looking at the label on the front, I like to make sure something is what it says it is if you see what I mean so I just look at the back label to make sure I am buying what I think I am buying.

It was around this time that I had to go on a very low fat diet, I was waiting to have an operation to have my gall bladder removed. Whilst in hospital, this was prior to my diagnosis the surgeon said that prior to my operation that I would have to cut out all fat from my diet. The surgeon said that I would lose weight and that food wont taste of anything. He also said that if it tastes nice, it contains fat. The surgeon was correct.
