Your uncle is right, stay out from the kerbs, thats where most debris is.
I tend to ride where a cars nearside tyre runs, its usually clear of debris and if you ride assertively, cars shouldnt trouble you too much. In the end, I think we all have runs of bad luck...I know I have but since adopting a strong position in the road, ive had precious few.
All other advice above i'd agree.
looks like I'll be doing press ups with a hand pump till I get a track pump then!

I went a while without a puncture and then rode like the wind on a rough surface a few days back.
Sure enough I got a puncture.

I have already learn to choose my routes more carefully for road tyres. Now I will stick more rigidly to lower speeds for rough/debris strewn surfaces.

I am "big boned" as you put it! (5.11 and 100kg, that's what 15 years of rugby does to you...) so I guess that adds to the problem of underinflated tyres.

Hi,

Big people need fatter tyres and it doesn't get much more complicated than that.
e.g. for a 70kg person running 23mm tyres at ~ 100 psi a 100kg person should
be running 28mm tyres at ~ 100 psi for a similar road experience.

FWIIW at average weight I run a near slick 30mm rear tyre and a semi slick
32mm front tyre, at the lower pressures they afford the extra suspension
far outweighs IMO any advantage of skinnier tyres on typical roads.*
Back typically about 60 psi and front about 45psi I'd guess.

Yes they are both not light, both puncture protected, no punctures so far.

rgds, sreten.

* hitting a nice stretch of good tarmac the bike clearly goes faster,
and would go even faster on racier tyres, but I don't fancy the
racier tyres on typical UK roads, its a compromise.

Fast and careful!
Could be any of the above ,as we have never had rain like it of late ,remember the rain drags all the small flints ands stones out that we love to get in our tyres and then our inner tubes, check tyre before riding, your getting plenty of practise in changing tubes

re: handpump, I recommend the Topeak road morph or turbo morph, both of which have a built in gauge and are mini floor pumps, which means they can be used to get up to much higher pressures than a traditional bike pump. It takes a bit longer than using my track pump at home but I can easily get my tyres up to 100 PSI.

I had the same problem with Gatorskins , actually I still am as ive put them on the TCR and have had three punctures on that . I took them off the Defy after about 15 punctures and switched to Armadillos .

well I've done two rides now (about 30 miles) after pumping up the tyre much more than previously and I've not had a puncture so I think, fingers crossed, that has solved the problem!

Thanks a lot for all the advice guys
