I've got a topeak track pump which is excellent, like others it really is an extraordinary thing once you get one and realise how much easier they are to use, that and you'll realise how far off you probably are with a bog standard hand pump. Then on my roadie I have a topeak mini-morph although unfortunately clicked the wrong one so it doesn't have a gauge...

It will mainly be down the canal and road I will be cycling. Wonder if I could come up with an excuse to take the pump back
keep it anyway as it will last you for years

Track pump is the way to go! Mine's got an arrow you can twizzle round to mark the correct pressure for your tyres so it's easy to tell when you've got there. If i'm out on a ride and need to pump up, i've got a small pump with no guage so i'd just do it firm enough to get home on and then sort it out once i'm back.
Different bikes and tyres take different pressures anyway, so after a while you get used to what your tyre feels like when it's 'full'. I run my road tyres at 100psi and know pretty much what that feels like, so if i didn't have a guage i'd probably not be too far off.
