pump connector

Hi, Bought the one on the left from well known supplier near Rutland water and it wont over come the pressure in the tyre, the pump handle flies out if you let go! Any ideas?

My old one, on the right, still works but has a bleb in it. So it's not the valve.

It was cheap but did come from a well known firm, too long ago now for me to whinge at them.

It's been years since I used a flexible connector - I recall that there were 2 types, one for Presta and one for Schrader valves but I can't for the life of me remember how to tell them apart.
