Psychopaths + sociopaths

I have been watching some YouTube vids about this. They say that about 1% of people are psychopaths and about 4% are sociopaths. Are the rates really as high as that?

In WHO scale we use at work, there's only a diagnosis for "Antisocial Personality Disorder" (APD) or Dissocial Personality Disorder (DPD) aka a Sociopath. Psychopathic Personality Disorder is considered merely an extreme form of this. That means that while in law someone can be declared a psychopath, medically they have Antisocial Personality Disorder. This means that the percentages are possibly based on the legal definition as there isn't really a medical diagnosis of 'Psychopath' just extreme APD.

The word 'disorder' is important because if someone has a disorder they are considered incapable of being aware of it and are generally considered incurable. If they display symptoms of a disorder it is considered to be curable. I work in a non-residential therapy centre so I rarely come across people diagnosed with APD. I do have a couple of people in my group who show symptoms, but that could be because of medication, other psychological issues (Schitzophrenia, for example, or ADHD), or just a learned behaviour because they found they can get away with it.

I thought clinically there was little difference between the two, but am happy to be corrected.
Personal opinion, but I suspect the rates are higher. Society in general seems to be becoming more dysfunctional, which may either create or bring to the fore the underlying causes. - Although I appreciate this raises the nurture/nature argument

A psychopath has no ( or very little ) conscience, or concept of right and wrong. A sociopath has, but doesn’t care. If you have a gun to a psychopath and asked them to shoot someone, chances are they would just do it, the sociopath would at least ask why.

Officially that's pretty much the case: there's no specific diagnosis in the 'Psychopath' category, they're considered 'extreme sociopaths'.

People with other psychological illnesses like Bipolar, Narcissism, Schitzophrenia or ADHS may show certain antisocial symptoms, which will skew the figures. It's also possible to have some of the symptoms without having the disorder, which will also give the impression more have the disorder than otherwise. Likewise some medications can give people 'antisocial' reactions.

Most psychopaths are not violent, I've met a few over 67 yrs of life. What they do is screw up everyone who comes into contact with them. One springs to mind....
She was as nice as pie when she met him and they had a child together, which meant marriage! Her words. Three years down the line she wanted a divorce, as in coming home one night and telling him to get out of the house, no infidelities, no arguments, just totally out of the blue.
Then she demanded support for the child, even challenging the CSA's calculations and, once that was settled, that he also paid half of whatever she chooses to spend on their child. Any refusal or suggestion of refusal to meet these demands was met with petty reprisals or appearances in court, which she always lost. Over the years they wasted a fortune and screwed up their child.

The world would have been a far happier place without her, except for my grandchild.

There’s a test ( called the PCL-R )

I’ve had to undertake this test a couple of times as part of a pre employment check. I scored 32 the first time, and 28 the second. Which ( apparently) is extremely unusally high for someone not jailed for something.

92 the first and 72 the second.
I could, of course, have scored a lot lower if I hadn't answered honestly; which is obviously what I would have done if the test was going to determine my employment prospects.

That's a good example of what I've been talking about: That could as easily be Narcissistic personality disorder, Bipolar or Borderline, Asocial personality disorder, or simply a woman aware that she can get away with almost anything in a divorce because the system is skewed towards women, and men are blamed for almost everything. A lot of my male clients are in therapy for the latter reason.

Most psychopaths are violent, it’s one of their defining traits. In fact it’s a key differentiator between psychopaths and sociopaths.
