i guess there are foods that would do just as good a job but a shake is convenient and easy, plus also tastes nice after a long ride

They can be pricy. I use Gorilla Whey, which is reasonably priced but still not exactly cheap. Schwarzenegger now.has his own brand stuff out and it costs a fortune.

They ain't no substitute for food, but then its difficult to find food that provides as much protein without any fat like the shake. That and it makes a change from grilled chicken. Don't get me wrong, I like chicken but 6 times a day can become a bit tiresome.

I just use My Protein whey, I buy 5kg bags when there's an offer and seems to last me a decent length of time. There's 10% off it at the moment but once you're signed up they always send you discount codes and offers so I never actually pay full price for it. I take it every weekday morning after a fasted cardio session or after a ride on the weekend. Also they do price matching to other discount stores for similar products so for example if you find 5kg of whey elsewhere cheaper stick the website in their price beater and they'll probably have it listed.

Try eating only chicken and turkey for 2 years then tell me it's boring

I used to use Reflex Natural whey protein but I don't anymore.

Glass of milk with 1-2 raw eggs, some spirulina powder, 2-3 tablespoons of Udo's choice EFA oils and any fruit juice to hand (cherry is good and there is a joint juice available with cherry). All cheap as chips apart from the Udo's choice which is very expensive, but I don't buy it specifically for shakes.
