Yes - all the best for your father. My dad had prostate cancer and was being treated for it, but he died of non-related conditions.

The finger up the bum thing isn't so awful, and it makes a great topic for conversation.
When my brother-in-law had the examination he put on his best Kenneth Williams voice and said:

"Ooh doctor - I've only just met you!"

The doctor convulsed with laughter, finger still in place (nice!), and the practice nurse was hopping about from foot to foot, almost wetting herself!

Thanks for the timely advice buggi- and best wishes to your dad.

Had a well-man check a while ago but they didn't mention checking the blood test for prostate screen and I was half expecting to hear the snap of a latex glove behind me.

Hope your Father is OK,Cancer is a nasty piece of work.

I'm 45 and keep wondering when is the right time for the check.

Go ask (demand) an MOT from your GP and get your tetanus done. It's peace of mind to know that everything is inside normal limits. If I'd not been twotted off my bike I'd have not known that my cholesterol was too low.

I'm 45 as well and I know its time to start keeping an eye on things.

Best wishes for Mr Buggy Senior.

I wish your Dad a speedy recovery too Buggi. I have 3 friends who have made a full recovery, so take heart!

FWIW, there is a two year DIY Bowel Cancer screening for everybody over 60 too. It's a bit of a "messy" process involving gathering your own poo samples over a 3 day period and sending them off for test. Waiting 3 weeks for the result of the test is marginally worse that taking he sample though but worth the effort if it provides a all clear or even an early diagnosis.

Had the colonoscopy last year, great fun...about 3 metres of tube with a camera on the end stuffed up there.... but you can watch its travels on the close circuit TV if you're brave. Finger up the bum is a breeze!

A friend, James, suspected that he had a problem with his colon and went to his doctor. He was asked to come back for some X rays of the inside of his lower gut.

Here is the general idea of the procedure. It has little bearing on James's experience....

James was told to eat nothing but steamed fish for 24 hours.....and then take the laxative.:hyper:
He was also told to be no further than 30 seconds from a lavatory pan after he had done so. Nothing happened for thirty minutes, and he was feeling quite relaxed. Shortly thereafter, all hell broke loose for some hours.

He went to the specialist and rolled into a ball while the pipes were inserted to inject the barium. The specialist was very good at putting him at his ease, and sent him on his way. He made no mention of the terrible industrial flatulence that passengers on the Central Line would have to suffer in the patient's company on the way home.

He described his experience in a curry joint after a few beers. Deep joy.

Spare a thought for the doc too. Colonoscopes are sometimes used to clear blockages which can have some explosive flatulence pressure built up behind them leading to the immortal lines in one case (so be said in best Janet from Dr Finlay's Casebook accent) of "Och, Doctor, I can see your shadow on the wall"

pah! Kids stuff. You've not lived until you've had a few feet of pipe inserted in to your Most Gentlemanly Item for an in-depth and close-up look at Mr. Prostate. And, then again, there's TURP. Don't make me show you the vid...............

I've decided. This FNRttC is the Prostate Awareness Edition. A full moon, the open road and a safety talk they'll remember for a long time to come........

Best Wishes to you Father.

Not sure if anyone is aware of 'Movember' - During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men’s faces in the UK and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

Here is the website link: http://uk.movember.com/?home

This will be the second year we have done this at work and last year we raised approx £500 but also just as important is the raising the awareness issue for us blokes.

Hope by posting this link it has not broken any forum rules.
