Would have been good if they stopped the person with a can of Special brew in his hand riding a £2500 Orange mountain bike that i saw on my commute today.
Maybe totally innocent of course but i had my suspicions.

Just out of interest to those who object to being stopped what do you think the police should do.

Cyclopathic, you are not a lucky guy to have had a few nicked most of us get wise after only one. I would not fancy your insurance premiums.

But unless there is registration for bicycles then it flawed

Its not that dissimilar to them pulling a car over for a routine check and checking ownership / allowed to drive it if not yours, insurance etc.

Yes it's annoying, there is no receipt for my road bike as it was bought for my dad's 14th
the receipt for my mountain bike (frame) is on a notice board at my parent's

however, I can list every component on my bikes and have a few photos of them around the place.

Wow, what a dumb bleedin idea.

I'm pretty sure I don't carry a picture of myself on my own bike or receipt for a bike I bought 10 years ago.

Do the boys in blue also want to check that the phone I carry is mine, my watch or laptop in my bag?

what a dumb post...you are probably the sort of poster who moan the police do nothing about bike theft.

But it's a hell of a lot easier to see if you are the owner or are allowed to driver said car than it is with a bicycle.

We can't have it both ways; complaining when bikes are stolen and nothing is done about it or being stopped to check that the bike we are riding is not stolen.
Yes it's a bit of an inconvenience, but nice to know something is being done to address a rapidly growing crime.

Now, methods of proving bike ownership on the spot is a whole new thread!

Post code stamping seems like a good idea. It could help get your bike returned to you in the extremely ulikely event that it is found and it would also show that you owned the bike (wouldn't work if the bike in question got nicked by someone at your address but that would be a bleak old world to live in).

I keep meaning to get my bikes coded but haven't got around to it yet. I'm not sure how it might affect any resale issues though but on my sub £250 machines it isn't that much of an issue.

Also I am not sure of the wisdom of stamping ones postcode into a carbon frame.

You can get a UV pen from immobilise.com then you can just write the postcode on the frame.

Presumably the police can only conviscate your bike if they have good reason to think it is stolen - not just because you arnt carrying a picture of it in your wallet or have the receipt on you.
So long as your legit then, other than a slight inconvenience no probs.
Its only if you have inadvertently or deliberately got a stolen bike that you have something to be concerned about.

HAve receipts for both Bromptons & possibly for the MTB. Not the 25yo Galaxy though.

I think I could tell a good enough tale about history and componentry on any of them to convince I owned.

As someone who has just had a BikeRegister marked bike stolen, I'd be more than happy for the tea-leaf to be stopped and the bike checked over

Don't expect the bike to show up otherwise  The police closed any sort of investigation after 3 days
