Progressing from Progressive?

There was a fashion for "rock versions" and classical rock. In some ways pioneered by Rick Wakeman (et al) and caried on. A guitarist called Yngwie Malmsteem carries this through the 90s with semi classical rock opuses.

Ok, so Gonk Man is clearly living in this century (physically, at least...) but are there any genuine modern prog bands around? I've heard Radiohead described as prog (plausible) and Muse, which isn't.

You are all just JEALOUS!!

Not only is he a guitar god he also has HAIR!!

Funnily enough I have a wah pedal that controls my facial expressions.

I notice that alot of the shred players get alot of stick but you have to say they have very good technique.;)

Do The Sensational Alex Harvey Band count as Prog??

They did some pretty way out stuff on "The Impossible Dream" album (The Man In The Jar for one. great track)

Very good technique, yes, but it's all so meaningless!

Meaningless? Some of it (Michel Angelo Batio anyone?), but by no means all of it.

Sorry, it was him I was referring to but that wasn't clear from my reply. But there are plenty of others, too (not all)!

When I worked in FE colleges, I was very used to what we referred to as "bedroom guitarists", some of whom had developed very good technical skills but were hopeless at holding down a basic part in any band. A clear case of running before they could walk and very difficult to remedy later.

Yes MAB doesn't get my distinction award ;)

And I know what you mean about bedroom guitarists, just look at youtube. There are hundreds of them who can play the most insane fast neoclassical riffs...on their own. You can usually smoke them out though because often their vibrato is shocking, and their slower passages sound out of tune because they press too hard on the frets as they're used to skipping over them playing something at 500bpm.
