Try tightening the bolts that hold the chainring in place. They will creak in a squeaky way if they are even just a little loose.

+1, grease the bolts and where the chainwheels sit on the spider as well.

Finally seems to be sorted, the headset was a bit loose, bit of tightening seems to have done the job.

There was a powerful mechanic in my local Halfords up until recently, I only found out he'd left after I received the care plan for daddies' day and went looking to speak to him!
