Plenty of ideas here. I quite like the idea of transparent patches, although that type of thing always seems to peel off easily. Maybe cleaning the surface with a solvent will help. I'll give it a try.

I use the shop bought clear ones on my best bike, but for my aluminium bike which I never got round to doing for a couple of thousand miles, actually had the paint worn away and a small groove worn into the aluminium both sides of the headset from the cables.

Having found out that patches do come off sometimes, I always clean the frame with either ethly alcohol or meths to remove any polish, dirt etc.

Yesterday, having bought some new brake pads for my old bike, I thought I might as well remove the insulation tape that I use, and instead use these little advertising stickers I got with my brake pads.
And as a warning, for others I normally use cotton wool with the spirits to clean the frame, but yesterday I used kitchen roll to clean off the resin from the insulation tape, and when the spirits dried off, the paint work had been scratched quite badly by the kitchen roll, but the patches covered the area up so I was lucky. I'm just glad I did not wipe the whole frame down with it.
