I found that a a length of windscreen washer tube from an old car can be cut to length and then if you split it open lengthwise with a sharp knife and slide it over the cables it acts as sleeving over bare wires.

An interesting idea. I see some new bikes with a length of soft rubber tubing fitted. I note it seems to slip off the contact point after a while. Perhaps a drop of superglue would stop it moving relative to the outer cable, anyone know?

I have used it to sleeve the cables on my MTB and it just keeps the crap of the wires and can be easily removed for lubrication/ cleaning. and it costs pennies from a scrap yard.

Electrical tape at the rub points. Easy to remove if you want to sell your bike, but not the prettiest solution.

Or helicopter tape - it's clear.

Also, if putting tubing around the cable, you're not stopping any headtube rubbing (just changing the surface that rubs against the headtube). Or is something else meant by the use of tubing?

Madison sell a set of patches which stick on to the frame under the offending cable. Made from helicopter tape or similar I presume.

I'm not sure I see the point of attaching something to the cable itself - it might slow down the damage to the painted surface but it'll still rub.

I use sticky backed aluminium foil stuck to the headtube.

Just yesterday I bought a pack of frame protection patches, consisted of a handful of circular patches (2 sizes) and one long chainstay patch, self adhesive clear silicon type material...£4ish from Halfrauds. Great job.

I put it over the bare cables where they run along the frame, between brackets.

We'd be better off refusing to buy badly designed frames till manufacturers took the simple step of fitting a couple of 50p cable guides to the head tube so this wasn't a problem to begin with.

Would you but a car where the normal operation of the controls took chunks of paint off the wings unless you covered them in Gaffa tape? And don't get me started on having to get threads chased and bottom brackets and head tubes faced on brand new frames. The best place for crap like that is up the makers arse.
