Its not great. Are you on road bikes?
I did the full length earlier this year, near civilisation its a mixture of reasonable to good quality gravel/tarmac. Mostly around Preston and Lancaster with scattered bits in between.
The rest is a towpath in the very traditional sense, mud track through grass and very bumpy. As a ride, its a slow bimble through some nice country side.

this is our latest route through the area. you'd recommend we go up the East side of the M6 then for a picturesque route?

Beware, any route to the east of the M6 is likely to be lumpier than routes to the west.
Not saying don't do it - hillier country makes for better scenery, and there is nothing hideous - just depends whether you were hoping for a flat day...

rode it from Galgate to Lancaster in the summer... mostly a narrow cinder path and a pain in the arse

NCR6 is a good quiet route.. although I've only done it between Burton in Kendal and just south of Garstang... it's a lot more pleasant than the tow path.
lancaster to scorton...
*, the blue line vias off the route which follows the green dotted line north of scorton... best to follow the route six signs than my blue line.
Scorton - Garstang
again, route 6 follows the green dotted line south to Goosnargh and eventually into preston.

You dont need to return to the start point which is Billsberry..but carry on to Lancaster once you pass through the Trough...but you must do this route anticlockwise heading for Chipping before going through the Trough first so that you will be heading northbound for Lancaster.thereafter.
