I have Optilabs varifocal cycling glasses which are fine. They phoned me to double check tye prescription and said if I had any problems with them to return and they would replace lenses. Find curved style glasses essential to block the sun out.

I agree that single vision os often fine for cycling

at least it is for me - in fact even for reading I often find myself looking at the book (OK Kindle) through the top part anyway

I only deliberatly use the other bit for small print and the like

Hence, for cycling I could even get the cheap one you seen advertised on the telly if my main concern was damaging my main specs
and then I would have a backup - which does worry me when we go on holiday - especially if it involves a lot of driving!

For me it's wind protection plus a side benefit of cutting out glare round the edges. On a cold day when going fast my eyes stream too much wearing regular glasses.

Agree wind protection especially in cold weather - normal specs just leave me with streaming eyes especially on long fast descent.

How non glasses wearers survive on a bike is an eternal mystery to me.

If they’re pootling to the shops at 10 or 15 mph they probably won’t have much bother. If they’re getting some speed up they’d do well to wear at least some sunnies or safety specs. I wouldn’t fancy a bumblebee or lump of gravel in the eye at 25mph. Even a small fly is going to hurt

I generally travel at about 15 mph and wear glasses
when I get a bit of gravel on my glasses it seems like a boulder
a bumble bee looks like a building

without theglasses if you be a serious problem

I bought some Rudy Project finally this year after dodging the decision for a few years due to cost. Went with the Defender model and waited a few weeks…. Got them delivered and my vision was worse with them on vs without them🤷‍♂️ Investigated to make sure the prescription was correct and all was OK. Turns out that the curvature of the wrap type glasses were affecting my vision and effectively made them a waste of time. Luckily the company that made them offered a full refund.

So i then bought a similar style of cycling glasses and ordered the cheapest pair of new glasses with large lenses in, in total the whole lot cost me £50, then i have simply used some blu tack to secure the lenses inside the sunglasses. The look good (to me), work well and didn’t cost a whole lot, and as a bonus i can even see with them😂

I just bought some new shades at sports direct. 50% off apparently. Paid £24.99. comes with 4 colour lenses.

As my prescription hasn't changed much, the old optilabs frame snapped a while ago, so just stuck the lenses inside the cheapo ones. Seems ok. Will try it out this week on the bike.

Saved a a few £......

Thanks for the idea..

I'd forgotten about this thread. After umming and arring for over a year and making do with a cheapo heath robinson lashup, I bit the bullet this summer and splashed some money at Extreme Eyewear.

Rudy Project Rydon matt black frames. Varifocal lenses with Transitions New Gen S brown anti-reflection tint.

£460 but worth every penny. Very happy with how the areas of different focus work for my eyes. I can see distance great, peripheral vision is as good as anything else I wear, I can read my Garmin and even close work is fine, as tested by a mid-ride tube change. I can even leave my regular specs at home when I go on a ride now.
The photochromic tint is just right, completely clear in low light and enough in bright sunshine.

I admire the ingenuity. I was clearing out a bedside drawer and found a pair of prescription Oakleys that must be nigh on 20 years old. The prescription is still ok-ish but the 75 years old Terminator look doesn't really suit me 😎
