pre Glued Patches......are they any good ?

Situation is.......... I got a p****re. Found and removed the tiny glass shard.Used my spare to get home. Found the 'very small' hole.**
I cleaned the area and used fine sandpaper.....very carefully and thoroughly.
Applied a Park Tool patch which seem to work but when I checked 30 minutes later the patch was coming away and the tube had gone down.
Today I used an old fashioned patch with glue......job done, no problem.
**there was just that one hole.

Following on from your other thread, I use them on everything except my road bikes as I found the failure rate of the patches rose possibly due to the extra pressure used. Fine on my cross bike, MTB and the family's bikes.

That makes sense....thanks.
Although this 'fail' was as the tube was under low pressure and simply hanging off the bars.

You have to apply them properly. Put one on without any preparation then they will fail. Prepare the tube as you would if using glue. Is rub down and clean the area. Apply the patch making sure there's no ridges with the patch. Pinch the patch and tube for a good 30 seconds until adhered. Do not inflate the tube outside of the tyre or the patch will lift. Done properly, patches last just as long as traditional glued patches.

So preparation is the key.

In order......
I did prepare it well. As I say..I cleaned and roughed it well.
I only pinched for a few seconds.
I then inflated tube outside the tyre but TBH they surely should be able to withstand that ????

Second all that.

Plus.... sanding around the puncture is not to roughen the area, but to remove the releasing compound that stops the tube sticking to the manufacturing mould

My experience, 100psi forget it. Co2 inflation, forget it. Inflating the tube outside the tyre (why?), forget it. Dirty tube, forget it. Poorly prepared tube, forget it. Don't hold the patch for a minute, forget it. Wet tube? You're walkin' mate.

I carry them as a get out of jail option, but prefer a couple of new spare tubes on the bike with me. But other folk have got home on my Park patches, and at off road pressures they work great.

I don't repair my own anymore I just replace, but not everyone has a domestic economy that affords them that option.
