Perhaps the bike felt better for not looking like a pack mule and decided to behave like a bike again................

That's why some bikes are tourers and others ain't. A good tourer will ride perfectly well with a load, anywhere.

I do most of my riding on an allez roadbike. Generally a circular route with minimal luggage. Two of my fastest rides ever have been point to point - either going to join my family camping, or leaving them to come home for my work. Both times I was carrying some 'stuff' in a backpack. Unkind people might say I had a tailwind, but I don't think so. On the best run of all my legs were quite simply on fire!

Personally, I would say panniers make bugger all difference to wind drag (unless they are huge). If you are carrying the same weight in both rucksack vs pannier, then things should be even.

Panniers are better for the SCR multiplier !
