So when i bought this old bike for a tenner i took the rear derailleur off, now its come to the time to putting it back on. But for the life of me can't work out how it goes on. i took some pictures so you can see the type of derailleur and dropout bit.

Easy: Remove the wheel, makes it easier. The little bolt goes through the hole in the gear hanger (on the gear mech) then the round nut, which should have a shoulder on one side which locates into the wheel slot, slides into the wheel slot in the frame and the derailleur screw into this little round nut. Push it back in the frame then tighten the bolt. This will retain the gear in position when you remove the wheel. make sure the slot in the gear hanger lines up with the slot in the frame, refit the wheel and do up the axle nuts.

Hope this helps. I would never get a job writing workshop manuals.

In addition to @compo's description, here are a couple of pictures which I hope will help:

The mount fits onto the dropout slot

The bike is upside down in this picture, but it should still be clear how the shaped nut fits on the inside of the dropout, clamping the hanger in place.
