I've taken quite a few powerful medically prescribed pain-killers over the years. I can't see any good reason not to. Trying to MTFU seems just plain daft if science has developed something that removes or alliviates the pain.

Not only that - but if for example you sprain your back - your brain tells the other muscles in that area to protect the injury - which they do by tightening - this IME can get incredibly painful - I was in A+E in the middle of one night - it took two rounds of tramadol to ease the pain.

The pain killers stop the spasms - which means you can do the PT , stretching and help the injury to heal .

Also brilliant as the medical profession is at times they don't know what causes the pain and pain management is your only option.

What strength is the codeine (co-codamol). OTC is 500mg paracetamol and 8mg codeine per tablet, with a dose of upto 2. The paracetamol helps the codeine's effectiveness. Prescription strength tablets are 30 mg codeine (take upto 2 - 60mg).

If it helps, it's fine. I'm taking the OTC stuff at present first thing in the morning to 'get going' with my hip/pelvis injury, and more at night to help me sleep. Just sticking to ibuprofen during the day. Taking it multiple times a day, or the prescription stuff will bung you up quickly.

I take Turmeric and Ibuprofen every morning to alleviate pain & swelling from slip disc and arthritis, works for me after various experiments. Will take Co-Codomol if very desperate, and will never touch naproxen again if I can help it.
Whatever works for you.

Just a warning about reading the packet .....

A friend had some pain and a sore throat - Flu, Cold, Covid, whatever - so he took some paracetamol. During the day he was also drinking Lemsip for his throat. A few hours later he wasn't feeling well so he went to his A & E who got him to describe his day. Suddenly he could see the penny drop with the doctor who told him he had overdosed on paracetamol - the main ingredient in Lemsip.

The next thing he knew they went into some sort of overdose protocol asking if he was having thoughts and should they get someone in to talk to him. In his search for pain relief, he didn't read the packet.

Lots of folk don't check - MIL did that once, fortunately we were there and said she couldn't have it as she was already on the max dose for paracetamol.

Has anyone actually successfully popped a pill? I tried once. It just broke up into little pieces.

We did back in the 90's

I have to stop my meds for reynauds
I've had Raynaud's all my life. It's never been as severe as some folk I've heard of, but now at 71 and taking blood thinner medication, the cold weather doesn't help it.
I've never had medication for Raynaud's suggested or heard of it.
What are you taking and does it help - ?

Can't answer the question specifically, but on the subject of codeine I don't see a problem with munching one or two occasionally then as long as you don't find they become moreish or experience other symptoms / side effects.

While the ills of opiates / opioids aren't lost on me I think the largest danger with codeine is dependence (and associated desire for stronger alternatives) rather than causing any damage itself, as long as doses are sensible. On the grand scheme of things it's pretty tame.

It's interesting how different people react; my ex used to say it affected her perception significantly while conversely I notice little other than a subtle anxiolytic effect (which of course is always welcome in my case).

I take them occasionally for muscular neck pain as waking with that really makes the rest of the day miserable without and am mindful to ensure frequency doesn't creep up.

I munch one or two occasionally - not a big deal. I haven't munched them for a bit till my off then it was back o the full strength prescription stuff, that helped me get out of the hospital/home/toilet.

I usually have the OTC stuff in the cupboard due to long term issues with a broken spine... it helps.

If you've had a tough day on the bike, there is no harm in popping a couple of ibuprofen after the ride to ease off pain, so you are ready to roll. It's all in moderation. I forgot to pop ibuprofen and co-codamol this morning as I left to drive to work - I struggled to walk from the car park to the office on arrival. It's rough sometimes. I popped ibuprofen when in the office to keep going, but it was 10am ish when I was more mobile, rather than 8:30 after popping the better stuff at 7am on leaving home.

As I always say, (awaiting the mod edit)

Sh!T happens if you are active, so patch it and carry on.
