I noticed this when I was adjusting my chain tension earlier:

I keep an eye on my tyres and replace them at the first sign of the canvas showing through, but this one seems to be in good condition with plenty of tread left, bar this patch where the outer layer has come off.

Maybe came into contact with a solvent at some point? Could just be a manufacturing defect as well. What brand is it?

If the outer layer has come off then replace the tyre immediately.
If you continue to ride on it you could end up in a whole heap of trouble

It's a Vittoria Randonneur. Quite old, but not used much except in the last year or so when it's done about 1000 miles.

Had it not been binned I would have sent it off you never know might get lucky.

Well, I could get it out of the bin, but for it was only a tenner (from memory) and bought from one of those 'One Day Sales' that set up in local leisure centres so I really don't think it's worth the hassle! Just interested in what people think may have caused it.

did it ride any different ?

Surprisingly, no! Although with the benefit of hindsight I *may* have noticed when it happened - I thought I'd punctured this morning (you know when you get that initial 'squishy' feel?), but it was only for a second and I rode 10 miles or so after that with no noticeable difference to normal.

Simon - you didn't ever lock the back wheel up and skid did you? You can wear through a tyre petty quickly doing that.

I'll admit to the odd bit of childish skidding:whistle:, but it is fairly rare and there's no evidence of uneven wear / skid patches on other parts of the tyre. It's a freewheel, not fixed, so chances are any evidence of skidding would be spread evenly-ish around the tyre.

Well one part of it would have to be the first to go and maybe that is what happened!

I know that I wrecked a tyre as a teenager with just one long skid.
