Poor quality National Cycleway.

The Rochdale is a really lovely canal. I've cycled it a couple of times and boated it once... one of the most fascinating waterways in terms of architecture, history and just the places it goes through. Though I grant you Newton Heath is probably not going to be top of many people's tourist itineraries.

Did it this year plus some of the Calder and Hebble. It's a fascinating canal but also one of the most neglected, I was watching a canal boatists diary on YouTube and they were beached/stranded and had to wait for a CRT worker to come out and open lock gates further up to get some wayer in there.

The basin in Manchester is a lovely but neglected area, it seems to be surrounded by car parks and building sites when considering how central it is it could be a lovely little trap of coffee shops and cake šŸ˜

They seem to maintain it for walking but don;t really consider the cyclist too much

and if they do then it is the knobbly tyre brigade and not you average numpty on hybrids and flatter tyres

I have found that the Bridgewater canal out of Runcorn is great as far as Moore - as it is also the Bridgewater Way which is a cycle path
after that it becomes fairly deep turf which gets muddy - witha narrow - sometimes VERY narrow - central bit which is a few inches lower and hence can through you off balance if you wobble a bit
OK it does get muddy after the T-junction but it is still rideable even if you do get the bike muddy

Basically up to Moore is has funding from the counsel (I think) as well - after that it is just the CRT so they maintain it for walking, fishing and the like

In the late teens quite a lot was ā€œde-designated ā€œ because of either barriers or on safety grounds.
Locally, all non-carriageway sections were allowed to stay listed as NCN, including one stretch of unrideable sand track between two delisted busy roads. So you can't assume anything about NCN and need a map like cyclosm/opencyclemap/cycle.travel that shows surface, not the OS rubbish that Sustrans uses.

It would be really helpful if all NCN routes were fully covered by Streetview. Not too hard to achieve, surely? Now, why might Sustrans not want to do that?

Freelancers could do it...

Freelancers could do it...
1. Spending charitable donations paying people to do work for google seems likely to upset some donors;
2. It might encourage more new cyclists to use Google's abysmal cycling directions;
3. ...?
 
Really nerdy point but the Bridgewater isnā€™t CRT - itā€™s run by a department of the Manchester Ship Canal Company.

True - I had forgotten that
CRT are probably better to be honest - Peel had a bad reputation about doing maintenance they can get away with - especially regarding swing bridges and the like!
At least according to the local papers!

quite a lot are* but Sustrans doesn't own Google (streetview) plus the little car thing cant get through some of the entrances to bridleways! so A bit harsh to blame sustrans for that particular aspect..

* a number that are have been done by well meaning freelancers general public with a camera and the technical knowhow to upload them to google.

This is NCN2 - part of the Avenue Verte linking London and Paris. Other surfaces included one that was grass and another that was bricks - not set in a nice path, but random angles like poorly laid hardcore. I ripped my jacket on vegetation that day too.
I love paths and bridleways, but I think there should either be a minimum standard to be included on an NCN route, or else they should start using suffixes to indicate surface (A - sealed surface, B - gravel or farm track, C - un-surfaced or B but with obstructions). The colour codes they use on the Sustrans map don't work for that.

They(google) keep on trying to get people either to walk the areas that the cars can't reach or take a tricycle on cycle paths/carfree areas.
