My winter bike has an old Shimano triple 105 5503 52-39=30 chainset. 130 BCD 9 speed.

I want to change the outer chainring to a 50T.

I'm not very familiar with chainrings and stuff like that so please guide me......

Can I use the outer of a double chainset as outer for a triple? I think in this case that would OK but I'm not 100% sure..... I believe that in some chainrings you attach the granny ring to the outer ring but with this crankset the granny attaches to the crankset directly.

I'm looking at a chainring
Shimano 50T 9-Speed Outer Chainring for Tiagra FC-4503, 130mm BCD

I don't see why that wouldn't work with my 105 crankset. It's for a triple and 130 BCD..... maybe a bit heavier but I'm not bothered.

Your help is very much appreciated

Yes. Take a look at Ribble for a vast selection. So long as you pick 130 bcd.

I did look at the Ribble and they do Stronglight rings that are Shimano compatible but they are plain..... so not sure how would that affects the quality of shifting.

SPA, has TA and those are also Shimano compatible and have pins too but they are quite expensive in comparison.

So any 130 BCD would do then...... that's good to me then

I have a choice of 50T 9 speed or 50T 10 speed. I think the 9 speed would be more durable and that suits me fine.

If I'm not mistaken, the middle of a triple and the inner of a double would be different though..... is that right?

I think they would be different - the middle of a triple will have ramps/pins set up to shift to/from the granny ring, which the inner of a double would lack. I don't know how much difference this makes to ease of shifting in practice though.

Yes, I think that makes sense

I'm going for the 9 speed from the link....

Thanks for all the comments :okay:

They are a little more expensive, but the quality and finish of the TA stuff really is a notch above the rest. Also bear in mind that for high mileage you are better off investing in zicral if you can afford it.

I've gone for the Tiagra chainring in the end. This is only going to go on my winter bike and at the moment I'm testing if 50t is what I want to ride.... maybe I'll go down to 48T.... if that is the case then I'll go for TA rings ; )

Would it make a difference that it doesn't have ramps?

Cheers
