Hi all, just to add my 2 pence..

For my first lock I did consider it an incentive to buy one with the so called 'insurance policy' from the manufacturer, however, over the years as I grow older and a bit wiser (!) I find them to be not that much of a deciding factor..

Basically, like any insurance policy they are made to not pay you out or pay out as little as possible! (I'm a born cynic as you have noted!)

Even in the US people have a very poor recovery record from Kryptonite, and from UK it gets worse. If you contact the UK distributor (www.madison.co.uk) they will just direct you back to kryptonite. The online form may not get you a response, and you may have to mail the head office (Ingersoll Rand, Kryptonite parent company). Lastly, you will need to post your broken lock, copy of receipts etc to the USA. If you have a UK insurance they will reduce payout ('Note: Kryptonite requires proof of payment from your insurance company prior to paying your deductible under this Offer')

If all goes well then you will get a payment taking into consideration deprecation etc so after a long struggle you can expect around 30-40% of the value at best IMO.

I note that despite all this Krptonite are still supposed to be the best (of the worse!) in paying out. OnGuard despite making great value locks have the worst reputatation in customer service as per every forum and review I have ever come across in the UK and USA.

Also I have had bike thieves take my locks with the bike twice....

I'd go for Abus Granit...and/or insure the bike and use the lock required by the Ts & Cs
