Well... Once upon a time there was a seat here. I know there was as I used to sit on it! 👍

But what are those holes in the back rest? A closer look shows that they were for inkwells, with a groove for your 'penny pen'. And behind there is a swivel/ratchet mechanism to swing the desktop into place.
