Im a mature 59 yr old fat bastard.....I started with 10 miles ( nearly killed me )
repeated it till it didnt hurt......2 times a week for a month
I then doubled it and kept going.....getting to a point where I was doing 25 miles an outing 2-3 times a week..for a few weeks.
After a couple of months I did my first 50...............now a 30 is a regular ride 2 -3 times a week
and Ive only been at it for 4/5 months.

I have dropped a couple of stones weight.but Im still over-weight...Im looking to do my first 60 any day and then its onto the ton.should all be done well before christmas.

I think your early weeks short distances are a bit of a waste of time.

Stay on the bike for an hour...2-3 times a week.....till you increase your distance and fitness........then up it . I dont see why you could go for 100 miles in six months.

Just my own point of view from my own experience.

Im confident I will do it .Averaged 12 mph on last 60 miler so will plod along and see how it goes.

now you see, that's where I'm going wrong then  i did the BHF 50 mile (50.9 actually ) Coventry ride last week and my average speed was 16.6mph. i paced myself perfectly for the ride but there's no way i could have gone on to do 100 miles

i guess I'm going too fast to be able to keep up the long distances week after week after week.

but then my interest is in mid range rides (30-40 miles) at a relatively quick pace. i just don't seem to be able to keep the speed down to a steady 12mph

I think Sam is considering getting someone else into cycling and a reasonable build up. Unless seriously unfit, or with age/health issues, then reaching 100 miles in a year is very achievable. How fast you want to get to the 100 miles level and how fast you want to be able to complete the 100 miles are the deciders. That will dictate how much training is required and the speed at which it's ramped up.

I would say 100 miles in 10 hours, including breaks, is a fair target for 1 year.
