I have a plastic disc on my bike at the back on the rear gears... what is it for ? Can I cut it off ?

Will it bugger up me changing gears or will they jump off the rear cogs?

I have no idea what it's for. Help ?

Tis called a spoke protector and prevents your rear mech from destroying itself (, your rear wheel, mech hanger, frame and potentially you if it happens in front of a bus) as a result of poor limit screw adjustment or a bent hanger. If in doubt leave it on.

It doesn't do any harm leaving it in place but if you feel the need it can be removed.

When you're happy adjusting your rear mech so the chain won't fall off the biggest cog, it can be removed by taking off the cassette. Check bicycle-tutor, I'm sure there's a suitable video on there somewhere.

Whip it off, they're bloody ugly, saw a big black one on a Spesh recently, like an old 45 (single record) for anyone under 20 years old;) Stuck on the rear wheel.

The fact I've just eaten 6 crumpets and 4 wheetabix and a pint of milk for breakfast kinda outdoes the few gramms argument. Still 6ft3 and 13 stone dead. Not bad I think.
