What's it called?

I'm replacing my cassette this week and would like to replace the disc at the same time but can't find one to buy online?

Help?

;-)

I believe that these generally get removed at the earliest possible opportunity ^_^

I wouldn't worry too much about replacing it, none of my bike have one and some (built up by LBS) didn't come with them.

All of mine have been removed - I think the LBS did some before delivery too! They are not required unless the gears are badly adjusted so I would spend the time taken to fit on checking the low range stop...

Do you have to take the cassette off to get to it? I'm thinking of just cutting it away.
They're normally just clipped onto the spokes and come off with a 1/4 turn.

Also refered to as a dork disc, I believe...

If cutting away with snips, watch out for flying shards of plastic as they can be made of quite rigid material. Turn your head or wear eye protectors.

i removed mine...had a very minor spill on a charity ride which bent my deraileur hanger a tiny bit, which in turn meant that my indexing was thrown out...mile down the road a change in gear had the chain jamed between the biggest cog and the wheel...and let me tell you that took some shifting !!.... Spent the rest of the ride staying in the middle to high range on the back cog......having said this i didnt bother to replace the pie plate....just made a mental note to fall over on the non drive side in future !

I wouldn't mind them half as much if they didn't start to rattle after a bit; all mine are gone. I don't think you need them -maybe they are just a holdover from the 1970's

I was once spotted outside Waitrose with a pair of side cutters having at a pie plate. My Attorney was with me, so I'm covered from a legal perspective. The fact that I was performing a pieplatectomy meant I'm covered from a moral perspective, too. The pie plate was a mangled, ruined mess when I was finished and it was binned forthwith.
