If you want something you can leave on the whole Winter, as a guard against coming off on black ice, then the Marathon Winter is the job. The carbide studs will last longer than the tyres so you can get multiple years, depending on useage. I haven't ridden on anything else since Jan and they've been fine.

Neither the tread, nor the studs, are of any use in deeper snow/slush, you'd need a big tread studded tyre for that. Even big tread without studs is an improvement. Personally this is the area I'd go homemade because we don't get much in the way of deep snow here, maybe 3 times in the last 15 years.

I did read all the DIY studded tyre threads but I've decided to just bite the bullet and buy some for next Winter.

I'd prefer the peace of mind knowing they were the "real thing," that the studs were in the best alignment and that the tyre wasn't going to collapse etc.
As well as, of course, saving the considerable hassle of fitting all the studs.

Mind you, this is the advice of someone who's never even ridden studded tyres, let alone made some, but that was my thought process anyway....;)

Check out both the Nokian and the Schwalbe studded tyres. These have carbide studs, which hold up well. Some others use steel studs, which wear out quickly. I don't think I'd want to waste my time making studded tyres using screws, even if I were a Scot. ;-) The screws will definitely wear out faster than carbide studs.

If the future's anything like the past then you don't need to worry for the next ten years.

Could be different this time though....

it might be a good job for sitting out in the sunshine pottering away this summer.

Being a lazy sod I left it until this week to do it. About an hour and a half per tyre and only one stab injury. The proof will be in the pudding and seeing how well they work/hold up to use.

£ 15 for the rivets? I am sure you could get them for less than that, RS are not reknowned for their low prices.

even so, you then need the tool and a lot of time to insert them plus some protective strip to protect the inner tube.

Clas Ohlson - swedish hardware/argos like store is selling studded tyres - cannot find them on their web site but pretty sure they are in their catalogue; price did not seem too outrageous. (£ 30 )

as mentioned here
