Are there places for locking a bicycle in London to recommend or avoid? I have a kryptonite U lock for the rear wheel and cable for the front. Once I assemble the bike I will have to lock it on the street while I'm in a hostel. The few places with bike storage tend to fill up quickly so it's not always available. I'm not sure if the left luggage in the train stations will check a bike. Greenwhich overground station was one option since it has a hostel nearby and a guy in a bike shop said it might be safer than central London. Queensway and area around University College London seem busier and perhaps less secure.
Yet on the train on most of the trains within central Scotland you can't actually book a space, just on the longer distance services. Touchwood the only time I have been refused on board with my bike was on one of those longer distance trains (Inverness to Edinburgh, I was getting on at Perth).
Yes it can be strange. I've only used long distance trains to and from Scotland so I don't know about the more local ones.
On Saturday I needed to get the train home from Carlisle to Preston. At the ticket office I asked for my seat plus a bike space. The ticket office man said I didn't need a reservation on the service I was using (operated by Transpennine Express) but did on the "inter-city" trains. The previous day I had caught a Transpennine Express to Edinburgh from Preston and did need a reservation!!! Same company, same line! This journey was pre-booked internet purchase, while the Saturday was turn up at the station.
