Had a very similar experience when the plug from a cheap cable snapped off in the headphone socket, blocking it and killing the sound ('you've got headphones in, haven't you?') Never did manage to get it out - had to get a new phone.

It's amazing how much rice can get inside a phone! Poked it out with a pin, brushed it out with a tiny paintbrush & sucked it out with the hoover. No luck getting it to charge. So took it to a repair shop & he plugged it in and it magically worked!!!

Bonus is that I've now discovered that I can play audio books through my radio - no need to take the phone into the bathroom every again!

As @woodenspoons says, the compressed air can works. Air dusters can be bought from the Pound Shop. Obviously, blow the air from a different hole to where the obstruction is. It’s worked for me when I have needed to clear fluff from the charging socket.
