I am going to replace it. As this one feels worn.
The cup feels worn? They usually last ages if the bearings are replaced regularly.

Get hold of a 5ft piece of scaffold to use as a cheater bar over your spanner. I have yet to come across a bottom bracket that hasn't moved using this approach. It can still be very stiff but the appliance of physics does work.

Looks really nice to me, I'd keep it as it is rather than re-paint - and for £10... some people have all the luck!

I'd second the advice to keep the BB cups where they are, new bearings and correct adjustment of the cups afterwards will probably get rid of any loose feeling. Freeing up a stuck stem can be tricky (I've had one old ten speed that just wouldn't budge after trying everything besides the dissolve-it-in-ammonia approach), but there's lots of good advice around if you google - good luck!

I got my hands on a peugeot last month for a swap of a rear mech and cassette I had lying around.
Didn't need much, just new tubes and tyres and I also changed the old quill stem for something more modern.
De-greased everything and reassembled.
New cables all round and front wheel bearings.

If you're going to paint, my advice would be to get it powder coated. I had a frame blasted and powder coated a few months back for only £40. Saves a lot of hassle and it looks smart. Enjoy your project

The blue bar tape is certainly a lot more tasteful, but I have to say I quite liked the blue/yellow camo on the previous incarnation - very much of its time!

When/if a cheap pug shows up on gumtree near me, it's going to be hard to resist...

Yeah the yellow camo stuff was literally hanging on for dear life so needed replacing. This one will be sold on so had to make it a bit more appealing for most people. That being said, if I was keeping it I'd be leaving the quill stem on there and keep it as original as poss

Try using a M12 bolt through the fixed cup then washer and nut. Just keep tightening the nut and the cup will start to undo, never had one that did not come out using this method. failing that http://www.bikesmithdesign.com/BBTool/

Cheers for all the advice. Been a great help. I'm nearly there with getting it all good again. Clean and greased all ball bearing and slowing trying to de rust all the bolts.

I don't know how to remove the cassette though, I want to take the axle out on the back wheel to apply fresh grease.

I think you take the axle out first by undoing one locknut and cone and sliding it out the other side, then use the right extraction tool (possibly sun tour two prong from the looks of it) to remove the freewheel... almost certainly a freewheel not a cassette, I think. Do the prong holes rotate when the cogs freewheel? If not, it's a freewheel, says http://sheldonbrown.com/free-k7.html

Yeah I was thinking that, but just realised the bolts are 17mm and I only have up to 16mm spinners. Another day now I guess
