every 1000' ascent = 10 points, every mile = 1 point
therefore 20 mile + 1500' ascent = 35 flat miles or 35 points.
it is my litttle system for comparing rides and estimating how long it will take me. I doubt it is that accurate but as a rule of thumb it has proved more accurate than I would have imagined it would of. I doubt it works well at the extremes 35 flat miles will be very different from 7 mile with 2800' ascent. However between those extremes it is a rough guide.
20 miles + 1500' ascent would be quite equivalent to 27 miles with 800' ascent for me (both rides would take me 2h 10min at my leisurely pace)

(i actualy thing 1000' ascent = 11 flat miles, but using 10 is easier to calculate)
and of course non of that takes into acount weather road surface and wind, but assumes starting finishing at same elevation
Interesting. I've looked at my stats and tried to come up with systems that work for me, but I've never managed.
When I get a bit of time I'll try to translate your system into metric (feet mean nothing to me I'm afraid) to see if I like it.

They're the bit of your body that pushes the pedals.

(Sorry.)
