Persistent puncturing

Has anyone had any experience of regular puncturing of Giant road tyres? I have been doing 30-50 miles a week on my giant Defy 1 bought in May. I have had loads of punctures on the back wheel only.

I have gone through several new Bontager tubes, loads of patches. One time I had 3 punctures on the back wheel on the 18 mile journey home from work. I can find no burr or other abnormality on the wheel rim. I can find no object stuck in the tyre-original PR2.

I am seriously thinking about replacing the tyres for Continental GP 4000 as they have got great reviews.

I am thinking that perhaps there could be a small fragment of an object in the tyre that under pressure impacts the tube to cause a puncture.

I have a track pump and always check and adjust pressures prior to a ride.

Any feedback welcome.

Could be a rim tape issue and a sharp spoke end if no obvious signs of what is causing the puncture in the tyre

Remember to identify the location of the hole in the tube and which way it was fitted and look at the rim in that area.

With the rear going it may be snake-bite - due to insufficient pressure in the tyre. -If there are two slits approx 5mm apart in theinnertube that is what it is.

I've not had one yet on my Defy 1 and I've been down some back lanes with stones in the road and all sorts!

I do find my tyre pressure need to be topped up fairly regularly on the stock tubes.

I can think of 3 obvious possibilities:
  1. If the punctures are on the inside of the tubes - look for a faulty or displaced rim tape. (Replace or realign the tape.)
  2. You have something embedded in your tyre which is puncturing your new tubes. Mark your tyre where the valve on the tube is (or line the tyre up so a logo lines up with the valve). When you find the location of the puncture on the tube, line the tube up correctly with the tyre and you should be able to find the culprit object embedded in the tyre. (If necessary, flex the tyre and carefully run your finger round the inside. You will be able to feel even a tiny piece of glass, metal or thorn projecting through.)
  3. You are damaging the replacement tubes with your tyre lever(s) when replacing the tubes. I was guilty of that when I first started riding again. I had about 10 punctures one after another before an experienced cyclist showed me where I was going wrong.

Always work out the reason for a puncture before repairing or replacing a tube or you are in danger of going down this endless cycle of puncture-repair-puncture-repair...

I've had a couple of rear tyre punctures where I couldn't initially see the problem even though I'd located the position. It was only when I turned the tyre almost inside out at the right spot that I noticed a small thorn stick up. When the tyre was held normally the thorn just laid in the tyre fabric and was undetectable. I always carry a small pair of needle nosed pliers as I can never pull them out by hand.

I've also just ordered a marathon + as my existing tyres are made of cheese.

Thank you to all who have responded to my question, it is much appreciated. I have a number of options going forward including:
1-Thorough examination of location of punctures, tyre and wheele rime and tape
2-Order some new tyres as I am not convinced that this back tyre is up to the job

I have a Defy 2 and have had a similar problem with rear tyre punctures. I replaced my slightly knackered rear tyre but still keep getting punctures. I have had the odd front tyre puncture but not the persistant puncturing that I've had on the rear.

I decided that my hubby didn't really need his Mavic Aksiums and swapped the wheels out (he now has the benefit of a bigger cassette for getting up hills) and I have had no issues with punctures since. Bontrager tyres on the Aksiums so that might be contributing to the not puncturing too. OH has had 2 punctures since having my Giant wheels and tyres.
I have checked the wheels thoroughly and can't find anything wrong anywhere with them, I have also felt, slowly and carefully, all around the inside of the tyre and there are no little sharp things poking through that I can find.

Swap the tyres out. Its worked on my bike. Hasn't worked so well on the OH's bike though. ho hum

Here for rides.
a run of mystery punctures with no cause found? Nearly always crap oem rim tape. Replace it or, if out on road, cover with electricians tape.
