Perfect rucksack/backpack for cycling?

I remember panniers, especially on days like today with killer crosswinds. Horrible things, as far as I'm concerned.

That is a bit of a generalisation, my bike isn't, and a backpack is a bit cheaper than a new bike and panniers...

That's what saddle bags are for then surely?

May be a tad late for the OP. But, if you are just looking to be more visible, why not get a HUMP pack cover for your existing pack? Will also protect the pack from the elements

I've started using a saddle bag and it is very liberating, but occasionally I do need to take a few more bits with me.
