Joe, have you ridden a mass-start race?

Hmmm, sort of. The reliability rides i have done were sort of mass start and something to learn from:eek: Lots of riders all going off at once was a tad un nerving at first, and when we got to junctions that we had to unclip at and stop, that was abit different.
Your probably going to tell me im talking a load of bollocks and to shut up now arent you?

Its ok to just sit on the right of a group. Someone else will come up by the side of you and full that gap. Or you might find other people behidn you will just form some stupid long line. Not your fault.
Sit where your comfortable in a group. When i first started to ride fixed in a group, i was either right at the back and not riding that close, up at the front.
If you ride fixed in a group of people with freewheel bikes that cant really ride smooth, you will know what i mean. It does get easier when you get used to it though.

riding fixed in a group i found ok - as you can moderate your speed quite precisely. I just try not to get *right* behind someone, as i don't think i could stop as quickly on fixed. maybe i could it just feels like you've got more 'inertia'. still if you were right behind someone and they jammed the anchors on hard for some reason unbeknown to you then you'd probably go into the back of them anyway
i once rammed into the back of my mate on a mtb ride when he slammed the anchors on - a ped who we'd seen passing, i just thought he was just some random walker but my mate recognized him and stopped (very abruptly) to have a chat! was ok though all it did was knock his qr open

I found that the group was jerky, and i had to leg brake more, because they would freewheel and slow down, where as me on a fixed would just want to keep the speed going.

I wouldn't want to tell you what to do; but may I just offer a suggestion? Go and do some bunch skills stuff at the track, or do a few circuit races. The ability you already have will see you through, and it will help sharpen your skills. It's hard to stay near the front in a group while keeping fresh.
