thank you for the info on the subject, don't worry i won't be forced into anything. I always research things to death before making up my mind.

the clipless thread that is stickied is a good read.

ps - i have never used toeclips, straps or clipless etc. all i have ever used are the default pedals you get with a bike so might take awhile to get use to them.

Getting used to a new bike and learning to ride clipless at the same time could leave you lying on the road. If you want to go clipless do it in a few months once you are familiar with the new bike.

Just before you change the pedals ride a 10 mile route as fast as poss then do it again clipless ,see how much faster you go, perhaps.....

That's about how I did it and I beat my previous best on a 45 minute regular run by around 7%. I haven't (yet) had a clipless moment, I love riding my road bikes with clipless pedals (M530 on one, M520 on the other), I prefer the feeling of security that they give but... but... I still can't agree with an opinion like "You need clipless to get the best out of the bike".

My hard tail has flats, my rigid MTB has flats, my son's flat-barred road bike has flats, my old steelie has flats, I can get plenty out of any of them and would not want, for many reasons, to change the pedals.

MacB can phrase it so much better than I can, I hope that he spots this thread.

By no coincidence at all, there's another thread running here which those who ride clipless happily say that "it happens to everyone" or "we all do it sometime" and talk of broken ribs as if it's an everyday occurrence.

I've broken my ribs, it wasn't something that happens to everyone and it hurt like hell.

i emailed wiggle which clipless for a first timer and they have suggested the m520 which seems very popular on these forums or the shimano pd-r540.

The shimano 540 come with sealed bearings as the 520 dont If you look around on the net the difference is about £10.The last few sets i have managed to get from halfords for about £31.00. Once you use clipless regular you wont turn back to standard pedals, take the plunge you wont regret it.

That's it - I've been persuaded... I've bought some SPL-SLs for my road bike. Are they going to make any difference compared to my SPDs?
