My 2p worth, I was sceptical so i use these:

Best of both worlds, I much prefer SPD to flat, I was forever getting my foot into a bad position, now its fixed exactly where I need it, not so sure about the power thing on the upstroke, maybe thats just my bad technique ^_^
It will come with practise.

What a load of old manure. What the actual rider said at the end is really the only thing you need to take out of that 'scientific' experiment. The ride was at steady state, there were no bumps to help knock his feet off of the flat pedals, it didn't start raining, he didn't go through any puddles, they didn't measure the small changes and resetting of his foot position on the flat pedals (other than to include the rider's observation that it felt "wierd") and cruicially, they didn't do a comparative acceleration test. That whole thing was a masterclass in how to try and justify the same old typical clipless refusenik twaddle, by selecting the most insignificant data, from the most insignificant parameters you can find, from a deeply flawed experiment.

Your choice, but can't imagine why.

I simply don't need them. I used to use clips and straps when I was younger but these days, having a heart condition which means I'll never be fast, I prefer to be able to jump on and off the bike wearing whatever shoes I have on. I've even been known to go cycling wearing Jesus creepers sandals and even flip flops.

I'm doing 50 to 60 miles a week and having my feet locked in will not make me able to push the pedals round and round any better.

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...

Well .... you're the one who said you didn't want to wear 'silly shoes' on the bike ........
